Osteopathy

The key to body balance and revitalization

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine that focuses on total body health by treating and aligning the musculoskeletal framework, including the joints, muscles and spine. Its aim is to positively affect the body's visceral, nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems.

This manual therapy is a unique holistic (whole body) approach to health care. Osteopaths do not simply concentrate on treating the problem area, but use gentle manual techniques to balance all the systems of the body, to provide overall good health and wellbeing. It promotes complete body health by diagnosing and treating issues with the spine, muscles, tendons and joints with the goal of improving the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems. Osteopathy helps decrease stress and minimize pain by correcting the structural alignment through manipulation and mobilization of joints, and providing tactile pressure and stretching of the soft tissues in the affected areas.

Why go to an Osteopath?

Osteopathy gives a unique and distinctive approach to all kinds of functional disorders. Patients seek treatment for chronic and acute disorders in a variety of body systems. Common issues include back pain, headaches, repetitive strain injuries, changes to posture during pregnancy, everyday postural problems, arthritis, sports and other accidental injuries. Although the primary focus of osteopathy is the musculoskeletal system, it is important to note that close attention is also paid to the circulatory, lymphatic, nervous and visceral systems.

Osteopathy and Children

The calm and gentle approach of osteopathy makes it especially suitable for treating children, including newborns and infants. Structural misalignments can lead to a range of problems; these problems may include:

• Back pain
• Postural problems - such as scoliosis
• Respiratory problems - such as asthma
• Manifestations of brain injury - such as cerebral palsy and spasticity
• Infections - such as ear, throat and/or urinary disturbances

Osteopathy can assist in the prevention of health problems and help children make a smoother transition with their growth and development. This holistic approach encompasses all variables that affect the person's wellbeing including their body, emotions, mind and spirit.

How does Osteopathy help the body heal?

One of the main principles behind osteopathy is that the body is able to self-heal and self-regulate. However, in some instances, the injury impedes the body's ability to adapt or heal. Sometimes even minor structural changes can have a widespread effect on the body that can be either symptomatic or asymptomatic. In these cases, treatment is necessary to restore the balance within your body and assist your body to use its natural ability to heal and strengthen.
